Thousands of Canadians experience CRA login Problems every year, especially when tax season rolls in and during big benefit payment windows. If you are trying to pull up tax slips, check your GST/HST Credit, confirm CPP or OAS amounts, or update your direct deposit info, getting locked out of your CRA account can be beyond annoying and time-consuming.
For 2026, lots of users have described the same headaches, CRA account lockouts, and ERR. 019 errors, sign-in partner failures, verification code problems, and multi-factor authentication MFA issues. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has also tightened online security, and as a result, the login checks feel more strict for a lot of people.
This full walkthrough covers the usual CRA login problems 2026, plus what to do to resolve CRA account problems quickly and safely.
Why CRA Login Problems Are Common in 2026
CRA login issues often start to rise right around:
- tax filing season
- GST payment periods
- CPP and OAS payment dates
- carbon rebate payment releases
- CRA system maintenance periods
And in 2026, tighter security updates, plus multi-factor authentication setups, have also caused extra login troubles for some users.
Most Common CRA Login Problems in 2026
Canadians often say they get
- CRA account locked, like, no matter what they do
- ERR. 019 login error
- Sign-In Partner is not working again and again
- verification code not arriving
- CRA page loading issues, sometimes stuck on a blank screen
- Multi-factor authentication problems
- browser compatibility errors, as it works, then it does not
- CRA website outages
Also a bunch of people on Reddit mentioned temporary outages and connection problems during the busiest filing times.
1. CRA Account Locked (ERR.019)
One of the most common problems in 2026 is the ERR. 019 account lock error, which is honestly a bit of a pain.
This tends to show up when:
- Incorrect passwords are pushed in multiple times
- Wrong MFA codes are entered again and again
- CRA security systems notice unusual movement
- Login credentials become corrupted, or their mapping feels wrong
CRA states that accounts can end up locked after too many failed login attempts or incorrect MFA entries.
How to Fix ERR.019 Quickly
Step 1: Wait 30 Minutes
Temporary MFA lockouts might automatically fade out after around 30 minutes, so please give it a little time.
Do not keep pushing multiple logins over and over again; that can make it worse.
Step 2: Clear cache and Cookies
Bad cookies, like corrupted ones, often create login loops and ERR. 019 style headaches.
To correct it, do this :
- Clear browser cache
- Remove cookies
- Restart the browser
- Then attempt to log in again
Many people say it works better after using Incognito or Private browsing mode, even if it feels a little annoying at first.
Step 3: Use a Different Browser
Some issues are specific to the browser itself.
Options that people tend to mention as working include :
- Chrome
- Edge
- Brave
Also, several Reddit users mentioned Firefox-specific login problems in 2026, but it may vary by account.
Step 4: Use CRA Credential Recovery
CRA now lets some locked-out users regain access by registering new credentials, instead of having to contact support.
2. CRA Sign-In Partner Not Working
Many Canadians use Sign-In Partners, like :
- RBC
- TD
- Scotiabank
- CIBC
- BMO
- Tangerine
However, failures from Sign-In Partners are still one of the most common login grumbles.
Common Sign-In Partner Problems
Users may experience:
- Endless login loops
- Blank pages
- Connection reset errors
- Timeouts after bank authentication
- ERR.021 errors
Reddit users reported widespread Sign-In Partner outages and loading failures in 2026.
How to Fix Sign-In Partner Issues
Try Incognito Mode
Private browsing usually helps by stepping around cookie conflicts.
Switch Browsers
If one browser doesn’t behave, try another right away.
Lots of users say it works after moving from Firefox to Chrome or Edge.
Avoid Mobile Browsers During Outages
Several users found CRA pages ran more smoothly on desktop, compared to phones or tablets.
Re-Link Your Sign-In Partner
If your banking credentials changed recently, you might need to re-register the Sign-In Partner connection.
3. CRA Verification Code Not Arriving
Many Canadians see delays when they are waiting for email codes, SMS codes, or MFA verification codes. During those busiest filing periods, it can get worse, and responses can arrive later than you would expect.
How to Fix Verification Code Issues
Spam or Junk folders check
Sometimes verification codes end up filtered incorrectly.
Confirm that the phone number is correct
Old numbers can make the code delivery fail.
Wait a few minutes
If systems are overloaded, verification messages may arrive late for a bit.
People on Reddit mentioned long waits during peak tax season traffic.
Use a different MFA approach
If it exists, switch to:
- Passcode grid
- Authenticator application
- Backup option
In 2026, CRA rolled out stronger MFA mechanisms to improve security.
4. CRA Website Not Loading
Sometimes the issue is not your account at all.
CRA systems can occasionally run into maintenance downtime, heavy traffic, and server overloads, which is not on your side, really.
Signs CRA Servers May Be Down
You may notice:
- Endless loading screen (yes, plural but still)
- “Service unavailable” messages.
- Connection resets, out of nowhere
- Random log-out behavior.
Reddit users frequently reported temporary outages in May 2026.
How to Check CRA System Status
Wait, and try again later
Most outages end within a few hours.
Avoid peak filing times
Watch for heavy traffic spikes around
- tax deadlines,
- GST payment dates,
- carbon rebate dates.
- Try a different device
Sometimes desktop access still works while mobile access does not.
5. Forgotten CRA Username or Password
This is still one of the most common login problems.
Your CRA credentials could stop working because of :
- Expired passwords
- security resets
- Inactivity
- Typing errors
How to Recover CRA Login Information
CRA allows users to:
- Reset passwords
- Recover user IDs
- Register new credentials
The CRA website now offers expanded recovery options without requiring phone support in many cases.
Important Tip
Don’t make duplicate accounts randomly.
Some login recovery guides warn that if you try a second registration, even in a small, quiet way, it can cause more account complications later.
6. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Problems
CRA has, like, really strengthened its MFA security systems quite a lot.
This helps to protect tax information, direct deposit details, benefit payments, and personal records.
That said, some MFA problems increased in 2026, though, which was not expected.
Common MFA Issues
Users report:
- Lost authenticator devices
- Wrong backup codes
- Expired MFA setup
- Incorrect passcode entries
CRA confirms repeated MFA failures may lock accounts temporarily or permanently.
How to Fix MFA Problems
Use Backup MFA Methods
If enrolled, try:
- Passcode grids
- Authenticator apps
- Alternative devices
Avoid Repeated Failed Attempts
Multiple failed MFA entries can escalate temporary locks into permanent account lockouts.
Update Your MFA Information
Outdated devices or phone numbers may cause login problems.
7. Browser Compatibility Problems
Older browsers may not work properly with CRA systems. Yes, it happens.
Recommended Browsers
Most of the time, modern browsers work better:
- Chrome
- Edge
- Safari
- Brave
Extra fixes you can try
Consider:
- Turning off browser extensions
- Pausing VPNs for a little while
- Updating the browser version
- Restarting your device
Legacy browsers still are a frequent source of Sign-In Partner problems.
How to Regain Access Without Calling CRA
In 2026, CRA expanded self-service recovery tools, and it feels more normal for people.
Many users can now:
- Re-register credentials
- Recover accounts online
- Switch sign-in methods
CRA officially says that some users can regain access without contacting support directly, which is honestly a bit surprising at first.
When You Should Contact CRA Support
You might still need CRA help if
- Your account stays permanently locked
- Identity check verification fails
- Your account was marked for security reasons
- Recovery options keep failing again and again
Tips Before Calling CRA
